Popular Types of Hardwood Flooring

Today’s consumers have a wide range of hardwood flooring products to choose from. Some of the most popular varieties include:

  • Pre-finished hardwood flooring: Pre-finished hardwood flooring is ready for immediate use after installation. It does not require any sanding or staining, although it can be sanded and refinished if you ever want to change or refresh the look.
  • Unfinished hardwood flooring: Unfinished hardwood flooring is ideal if you plan to install hardwood floors throughout your home or over a large area because it provides a more consistent and even color and finish. Unfinished wood must be sanded, stained, and sealed immediately after installation to protect the wood from damage.
  • Solid hardwood flooring: Solid hardwood flooring is made up of single slabs of wood. They can be sanded and refinished multiple times, meaning they can last for decades with proper care and maintenance. They are, however, susceptible to expansion and contraction if your property experiences high levels of humidity.
  • Engineered hardwood flooring: Engineered hardwood flooring uses layers of real wood that have been bonded together using heat and pressure. They’re harder and more durable than solid hardwood flooring and also provide resistance to warping in high-moisture environments. This makes them a great choice in homes where solid hardwood flooring may not be a good option or even in high-humidity areas like basements.

Experts in All Types of Wood

All hardwood floors are not created equal. Certain species of wood require more skill and precision than others to install correctly. At AG Construction, we have extensive experience installing virtually all types of wood flooring, including:

Advantages of Hardwood Flooring

There are many advantages to installing hardwood flooring in your home or business, but perhaps the most important are longevity, durability, and flexibility. Unlike carpet or tile, hardwood can be refinished for a like-new appearance or to change the look of the floor. To accomplish this with carpet or tile, the floor covering must be ripped up and replaced.

Unlike carpet and tile, which can often be easily stained, hardwood can generally retain its elegant aesthetics with regular cleanings and preventative care, making it not just a beautiful, but also an economical flooring choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can hardwood be installed over existing flooring?

Yes. While it depends on the material and condition of your existing flooring, installation options that allow for installation over preexisting floors are available.

Is it necessary to acclimate hardwood before installation?

Absolutely! Your wood expands based on the moisture in the room, so you must allow the wood to acclimate, or it could cause damage to the material during installation.

How do I choose the right type of hardwood for my home?

Many steps go into choosing the correct type of hardwood. The presence of pets, the moisture level in your home, and style preference can all factor into which hardwood you choose.

Can hardwood be installed in high-moisture areas like bathrooms or basements?

You cannot use solid hardwood in high-moisture areas. Since the wood will absorb the moisture, it will cause your wood to become damaged and difficult to maintain.

Customer Review, 5/5 Stars!

“We met Mr. Goodman of AG Construction after upstairs leak cost two interior walls and about 850 sq. ft. of flooring in our basement. From the initial quote to the final invoice, they have the flooring business down to a science. We found Mr. Goodman to be very patient, knowledgeable, extremely professional throughout the entire process.

Out of the seven contractors who chose to bid the project, the pricing submitted by AG Construction was competitive and fair. But ultimately, it was the overall professionalism they displayed and the willingness to go ‘above and beyond’ the call with guidance and advice that won AG Construction our business.

I’m a total novice when it comes to things like home remodeling so I tend to ask a lot of questions and would lean on the recommendations and opinions of professionals. Out of all the contractors who came to give us an estimate, Mr. Goodman was the only one who took the time to walk me through the process step by step, including everything that would need to be done and not just the flooring.

He gave us the benefit of a family-owned construction business by pointing out several potential ‘gotchas’ and things to look out that had nothing to do with the flooring. The information proved to be vital in avoiding what could have been a huge headache for us down the road with a different contractor.

The crew arrived promptly at 8am, going straight to work and had the installation (850 sq. ft.) finished by early that afternoon. Color me impressed!!

The work was flawless, with the crew going above and beyond, having to move several large items out of the room before getting started and BACK after the floors were done. We could not have been happier!

A big THANKS goes out to Aaron and the whole AG Construction crew!!”
