Parquet Flooring Repairs

Because parquet flooring is made of wood, it has the same vulnerabilities. Parquet flooring can suffer from water damage, rot, and other physical damage. It’s typically durable against things like impact damage and cracks. If your parquet flooring is damaged, you don’t have to replace the entire floor, thanks to the parquet flooring tiles.

If your parquet flooring is put together with tiles, you can remove the damaged tiles and replace them. Before installing new parquet wood floor tiles, you’ll have to remove the adhesive from the subfloor. After removing the old adhesive, you must put the new adhesive down on the subfloor and then install the new tiles.

Some parquet floors are made out of blocks, not tiles. In this case, the replacement block may not be the same height as the rest of the floor. The block will need to be sanded down to the appropriate height using a belt sander. You’ll need to apply stain to the block and any surrounding areas where the sander stripped the finish.

Call AG Construction at 240-246-4561 if you need parquet flooring repairs.

Refinishing Parquet Flooring

If your parquet wood floor tiles have experienced some wear and tear over time, such as fading caused by exposure to sunlight or scratches and scuffs from heavy foot traffic, you can refinish them. Keep in mind that you must also refinish your parquet flooring tiles after making repairs.

Refinishing parquet flooring takes a few steps, it’s not as simple as refinishing only the affected tiles or blocks. These are the steps that must be taken to refinish parquet flooring:

  • Prep the floor: The wax on the floor will need to be dissolved using a detergent as you clean the floor. If there are gaps between the tiles or blocks, you may need to fill them using glue.
  • Sand the floor: You’ll need an orbital flooring sander to sand the entire floor. The sander will remove the old finish and any visual flaws, like scuffs and scratches.
  • Add the stain: A stain should be applied in sections, then left overnight to dry.
  • Apply the finish: Using a paintbrush to apply the finish will take a while, so a floor finish applicator may be a better idea.

Repairing and refinishing your parquet flooring is a time-consuming process that should be left to professionals who have the experience and know-how to do it properly. Attempting to do either yourself could further damage your parquet floors.

Frequently Asked Questions About Parquet Flooring

Can parquet floors be refinished?

Yes, but it’s challenging and must be done correctly. The patterning means that sanding and preparation will take longer. Because the ultimate goal of refinishing is to enhance the appearance, we strongly recommend hiring a professional. If done wrong, you can cause irreversible damage.

How do I know when to refinish my parquet floor?

If your floor is dull, has patches or worn spots, stains, scratches, or discoloration, it may be time to refinish your floor. Floors generally start looking worn and damaged around 10 to 15 years after installation.

How can I maintain my parquet floor?

Installing a moisture barrier will help protect your parquet floor against water damage. Once installed, sweep, dust, mop, and vacuum the floor regularly. But, be careful not to use too much water. You should also be careful not to use too much wax or chemical cleaners, as these can damage the floor and dull the appearance. If you have pets, be sure to trim their nails regularly to prevent scratches.

How can I prevent dark spots on my parquet floor?

Carpets, rugs, and furniture are the most common cause of dark spots. Rotating these every so often will ensure even sun exposure. You can also apply polyurethane, varnish, or lacquer to help protect the wood from UV radiation damage.

How difficult is it to remove single pieces of damaged flooring?

It’s not difficult at all. The design of parquet floors makes it easy to perform “spot repairs.” The damaged piece(s) can be removed and replaced with a similar piece of wood. Further, a qualified repair professional should be able to match the tone/color of the wood to match the existing flooring.

Is prefinished flooring real wood?

In most cases, yes. It’s wood that has sprayed-on coats of polyurethane or, in many cases, stain. Because it’s prefinished, installation is faster and creates less mess in your home. However, the process makes it look like plastic, and you may not have as visible a grain pattern as parquet floors that are finished after installation.
