Hardwood Restoration in Washington, DC

One of the biggest advantages of choosing hardwood as your flooring material is the durability and look that hardwood offers. Not only are there all kinds of different hardwood varieties that will add a unique style to your home, but hardwood in general has a very timeless appeal.

However, even though hardwood is extremely durable and should last a very long time, it can still sustain aesthetic damage – such as scratches, scuff marks and more. These occur naturally due to wear and tear over time and often can’t be helped. Fortunately, this doesn’t meant that you’re stuck with a scuffed up floor – you can restore your hardwood floor to its original luster by simply having it refinished.

Hardwood Restoration Process

The following are the steps required in order to refinish your hardwood flooring:

1. The floor must be cleaned

Before you can begin, the hardwood needs to be completely cleaned. You’ll also have to move all furniture out of the way.

2. Sanding the hardwood

You’re going to have to use a buffer machine in order sand the hardwood. Before this is done, the perimeter of the room will need to be sanded by hand since these are areas a buffer machine won’t reach. You’re going to need to sand around four to six inches away from the baseboard. Avoid using a sanding block as this could miss uneven spots.

Once the perimeter has been sanded, you’ll have to move the buffer from side to side across the floor, making sure to move in the direction of the grain. This will remove the old finish from the wood. Performing this task can be quite difficult – not only do you need to know how to operate the buffer properly, you need to be very careful when you’re buffing the floor so as not to damage the wood or miss any spots.

3. Vacuum the dust up

Once you’re done sanding the hardwood, you’ll need to wait 15 minutes or so for the dust to settle. Then vacuum the floor up using a felt-bottomed attachment. Once you’ve made a pass with the vacuum, go back over with a microfiber cloth making sure to push with the grain.

4. Finishing the floor

Now you can finally begin finishing the floor. You’ll need to start farthest away from the room’s exit and work your way towards it. As you can imagine, this is an incredibly time consuming process – and if you don’t brush the stain on evenly, it will show.

5. Apply polyurethane

You’re going to want to add two coats of polyurethane once the finish has dried. Again, this takes both skill and time – and the strength of the smell can be difficult to deal with.

As you can see, restoring your hardwood floors can be an involved process – a process that can be quite challenging if you don’t know what you’re doing. Because of this, it’s a good idea to have a Washington D.C. professional refinish your hardwood instead of attempting to do it yourself.
